Hawai’i ‘Ulu Cooperative shows how to make a simple and delicious traditional Samoan dish, Fa’alifu ‘Ulu using four ingredients: ‘ulu, coconut milk, onion, and sea salt.
12 oz ‘ulu
1 small, sweet onion, finely chopped
12 oz. coconut milk, fresh or canned
Salt (to taste)
Defrost ‘ulu by steaming 10-15 minutes, or until the fork can just be inserted all the way through.
Once cool, cut into 1/2 inch cubes and set aside. Combine onion, coconut milk, and salt in a bowl.
Mix with hands for 5 minutes, squishing ingredients together
Add mixture and ‘ulu to saucepan, on medium high.
Heat until coconut milk comes to a boil, then reduce to simmer for 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and let cool for 10 to 15 minutes, or until coconut milk has thickened.
