Oven-Baked Cheesy ʻUlu Bites

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425℉. Lightly grease a muffin tin.

  2. Dice steamed ʻulu into 1-2 cm cubes.

  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper until smooth. Slowly whisk in the milk.

  4. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Continue to stir until mixture thickens, about 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup of the cheese until melted.

  5. Remove from heat, stir in egg and bread crumbs.

  6. Add in ʻulu and mix to combine all ingredients.

  7. Fill compartments of a muffin tin with ʻulu and cheese mixture

  8. Once all muffin compartments are filled, top with another light layer of cheese.

  9. Bake in the oven until golden brown, about 10-12 minutes.

  10. Allow the pan to cool before serving.

  11. *To customize, try adding in bacon or sausage bits, diced jalapeños, sun dried tomatoes, or caramelized onions.

  12. **When having little hands help, pre-chop and measure ingredients to avoid downtime for them. Keiki as young as 2 can help pour, stir, mix, and sprinkle cheese on top! Make sure little helpers wear oven mitts when working with a hot pan to avoid burns.
