Our ʻUlu Ambassador program aims to increase awareness and appreciation of breadfruit as an amazingly versatile, climate-smart, culturally important, ʻāina-grown superfood, and to spotlight the innovative chefs leading its culinary renaissance.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Christopher Kamalu Fujimoto

Born and raised on O‘ahu, Chris is the Community Wellness Manager at ʻElepaio Social Services and a private chef. His work and passions surround food as education, indigenous food systems, indigenous canoe crop cooking education, food as medicine, food access, and ʻike kupuna.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Chef Casey Halpern

Halpern, a fourth generation Oʻahu local, moved to Hawaiʻi Island as a kid. His grandfather and great grandparents arrived to Oʻahu by boat in 1912, by way of New York and South Africa. His father was born and raised on Oʻahu and Halpern grew up on the east side until he was 11-years-old. Heʻs lived in Hilo ever since. 

ʻUlu Ambassador: Sarah Burchard - Food & Travel Writer and Editor

Sarah Burchard, also known as The Healthy Locavore, is a Honolulu-based freelance writer, contributing to publications such as Forbes.com and many more.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Kealoha Domingo

With a culinary passion inspired by ʻohana, kūpuna, mentors & friends, Kealoha Domingo was born & raised on the mokupuni of O‘ahu in the district of Ko‘olauloa.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Kona Community Hospital Dietary Services

Kona Community Hospital’s Dietary Services Department and Ginger Café prides itself on the use of fresh and local food to nourish both the patients and employees working at Kona Community Hospital.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Cynthia Archibald - Nutrition Ecologist

Passionate about the intersection between nutrition, sustainability, food security, and restoring and preserving native foodways, Cynthia is committed to improving the health of our island community.       

ʻUlu Ambassador: Uncle Ricky Rocker

Uncle Ricky seriously loves ‘ulu, and has been eating it as a significant part of his diet for the past 50 years. His mission is to teach the wonders of breadfruit to the world.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Chef Janeé Gutierrez

Chef Janeé Gutierrez is a passionate food creative blending her Mexican roots with Hawaiʻi’s local flavors, crafting vibrant recipes and communal dining experiences that celebrate the cultural and culinary significance of ʻulu and kalo.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Mari Wills

Mari Wills is a dietitian chef consultant for the Culinary Institute of America and the founder of Bite Logic, a culinary nutrition consulting business. She was born and raised on Oʻahu and draws inspiration from local ingredients like ʻulu and kalo. 

ʻUlu Ambassador: Stephen Kina

From Kalispell to Kentucky, Stephen Kina is redefining what it means to serve “local-style” BBQ—with a deep respect for his roots and a fire to share it with the world.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Bonny Davis

Bonny Davis is a Native Hawaiian chef, educator, and food entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in culinary leadership.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Jasmine Silverstein

Chef Jasmine was born and raised on a small homestead fruit farm on the East side of the Big Island where she learnt through hands-on experience the importance and hardships of growing our own food.
