Our ʻUlu Ambassador program aims to increase awareness and appreciation of breadfruit as an amazingly versatile, climate-smart, culturally important, ʻāina-grown superfood, and to spotlight the innovative chefs leading its culinary renaissance.

‘Ulu Ambassadors

ʻUlu Ambassador: Christopher Kamalu Fujimoto

Born and raised on O‘ahu, Chris is studying culinary and pastry at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific, and has been working with HUC since early summer 2020.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Chef Casey Halpern

Halpern, a fourth generation Oʻahu local, moved to Hawaiʻi Island as a kid. His grandfather and great grandparents arrived to Oʻahu by boat in 1912, by way of New York and South Africa. His father was born and raised on Oʻahu and Halpern grew up on the east side until he was 11-years-old. Heʻs lived in Hilo ever since. 

ʻUlu Ambassador: Sarah Burchard - Food & Travel Writer and Editor

Sarah Burchard, also known as The Healthy Locavore, is a Honolulu-based freelance writer, contributing to publications such as Forbes.com and many more.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Kealoha Domingo

With a culinary passion inspired by ʻohana, kūpuna, mentors & friends, Kealoha Domingo was born & raised on the mokupuni of O‘ahu in the district of Ko‘olauloa.

ʻUlu Ambassador: Michelle Grove - Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN)

Michelle Grove of Kona Community Hospital is responsible for the food service & nutrition care functions the trauma center at Kona Community Hospital (KCH).

ʻUlu Ambassador: Uncle Ricky Rocker

Richard came to Hawaiʻi in 1968 & lived in the wild for three & a half years...living solely on fruit & occasionally supplementing with ulu...

ʻUlu Ambassador: Chef Janeé Gutierrez

Chef Janeé Gutierrez is a passionate food creative blending her Mexican roots with Hawaiʻi’s local flavors, crafting vibrant recipes and communal dining experiences that celebrate the cultural and culinary significance of ʻulu and kalo.
